Congratulations to class P6, St Timothy’s RC primary school, from the Greenfield area of Glasgow, who appeared in the finals of the school mock court project last week.

Steven Harte, a solicitor with Morisons’ employment team spent the last few months tutoring St Timothy’s to help with civil court procedure and their preparations for the daunting court appearances.  The project involves a fictional dispute over a mobile phone contract.  Schools throughout Scotland compete against each other acting as either Pursuers or Defenders.  The project culminates in a civil court case in front of a real Sheriff in Glasgow High Court.  In addition to legal skills, the project involves a range of class room subjects such as art, journalism, debating and writing skills.  The pupils even had to make their own court gowns.

Four teams from St Timothy’s took part in the project and performed very well with 3 out of the 4 teams triumphing in the High Court.  One of the teams progressed to the finals in Edinburgh, with the court case being conducted in front of a panel of senior judiciary including Lord Hodge, a Justice of the Supreme Court in London.

“This is an extremely worthwhile project and presents an excellent opportunity to give something back to the community,” commented Steven.  “The pupils and teachers were so enthusiastic and the increase in the pupils’ confidence was incredible.

The pupils were pushed beyond what many of them would have considered to be the limit of their abilities and it was amazing to see the results of their efforts.  I am confident that the pupils will be able to rely on the experience gained during the project in the future when faced with a whole variety of life’s challenges.  I do, however, suspect that the teachers may now face being cross examined by their pupils!”

Morisons Solicitors recognise the importance of community involvement and we were delighted to be able to support Steven in his involvement in the project.
