Even the weather could not dampen the enthusiasm of rugby fans from all over Scotland who attended the inaugural Morisons Solicitors Challenge Cup held on Saturday 18 August at Goldenacre, Edinburgh. As the day progressed teams from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Falkirk, Dundee, Ardrossan and Aberdeen battled it out under grey skies, each hoping for some silverware to brighten their day.
Tension heightened as Glasgow Hawks, Heriots, Edinburgh Accies and Dundee all made it through to the semi finals.
The tournament ended in a repeat of last year’s Scottish Cup Final with Glasgow Hawks and Edinburgh Accies both reaching the Final. Hawks proved too strong for the spirited Edinburgh side with their Scottish Academy semi professional players giving them the edge. The final score was 25 to 7 in favour of Hawks.
George Livingstone, President of Heriots Rugby Club, who hosted the event said, “All 8 teams competed well in trying conditions and The Morisons Solicitors Challenge Cup will definitely benefit those who took part when the season starts on 1st September.”

It is 2 years since the competition was last held and I am delighted that we have been able to reinstate this important and highly-regarded pre-season tournament.”
Falkirk Rugby Club was taking part in the competition for the first time. Following the tournament, Alex McQuade, coach for Falkirk, summed up how his team felt when he said, “It was a great compliment to be invited to take part in The Morisons Solicitors Challenge Cup. With 4 leagues of difference between Falkirk and the 7 premier 1 sides, we could not have had better pre-season preparation.”
The 2008 Morisons Solicitors Challenge Cup will be held on Saturday 16 August at Goldenacre, Edinburgh.
